COUP IN HISTORY (APRIL 22 ) 1990

1990- Major Gideon Gwaza Orkar and his conspirators stage a violent coup against the government of General Ibrahim Babangida.
They seized the FRCN radio station, various military posts around Lagos and the Dodan Barracks, Lagos, the military headquarters and presidential residence.
Lt. Col UK Bello, the man who Sacrifices his life for IBB
Lt. Col Usman Kankada Bello, a very loyal ADC to General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB). He was a colleague to most of the Coup plotters of 1990 especially Orka.
By the time the coupists entered Dodan Barracks and UK Bello confronted them, he didn’t know that the Presidential House has already been deactivated….
IBB later escaped via an underground route before the coupists could lay hands on him, he appeared at Obalende and headed to unknown destination where he was until Sani Abacha and Raji Rasaki repelled and overpowered the coupists, arrested them and handed over power back to IBB..
In his coup address, Orkar called for the cutting off of five northern states. However, the coup was crushed and Orkar was executed. However that made General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to relocated the Country Capital from Lagos to Abuja.
I should not fail to acknowledge the bravery of Major Gideon Orkar, Salibar Umukoro, Sgt Ademokhai and other brave men executed by IBB. There is evidence that many officers who took part in the coup remained undiscovered because Major Umukoro and others steadfastly refused to give them up despite torture.
Orkar was truly a gallant soldier, a man with the heart of a warrior. He had the opportunity to escape but he deliberately chose not to do so. He kept on fighting until he was overpowered and captured. The names of the soldiers killed or sentenced to prison terms are online
