After reading the recent press release issued by Emma Powerful, who now acts as spokesperson for the siblings of Nnamdi Kanu and their allied groups—namely Sunrise, Avid, and Autopilot—I can only say this: they should keep their fundraising, but they must count IPOB out of it.
It is no surprise that Barrister Maxwell allegedly confided in one of his close associates that his target is to raise at least ₦1 billion from the current appeal concerning Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. At first, I wondered how anyone could generate such an amount—for just an appeal?
Now it is becoming clearer how such figures could be projected. Imagine funding airfare for 11 lawyers, traveling two or three times a week at ₦500,000 per person, for an entire year. The numbers would certainly add up quickly.
However, as much as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains our leader, it is important to make this point clear: IPOB did not hire any lawyer to represent him and should not be held liable for any legal fees. IPOB withdrew from the judicial battle in his case following the 2022 discharge and acquittal victory, and that position remains unchanged.
Regarding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health and welfare, there is credible evidence that the IPOB leadership maintains a monthly support package for him and has been living up to its responsibilities. There is therefore no need for any alliance-based fundraising under this pretext.
I therefore urge IPOB members and the general public to remain vigilant and beware of any individuals or groups pursuing a ₦1 billion target under the guise of legal or medical support.
