A 2023 USCIRF report titled “Abuses Against Fulani Muslim Civilians” (USCIRF) that claimed government and state-backed abuses against Fulani Muslim civilians secretly filed during the Joe Biden government has resurfaced on the internet. This report claimed that governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Benin, and Togo have targeted Fulani Muslim civilians based on their ethnoreligious identity.
The alarming irony raising many eyebrows is that prior to 2023, the Nigerian government led by Muhammadu Buhari was literally a Fulani dominated presidency, which saw most Fulanis occupying key positions in the government for 8 years (2015-2023). This raises questions about who were the real masterminds behind the protracted security challenges in Nigeria.
While many indigenous Nigerians, especially Christian dominated communities were grappling with Fulani terrorist attacks on communities, villages, including raping and abducting women, kidnapping villagers, travellers for ransom and destroying farm lands, some Fulani elements secretly issued false claims of persecution on Fulani Muslim Civilians to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom; an attempt to spin narrative, play the victim card and then cover up the atrocities committed by Fulani terrorist networks across Nigeria.
This deliberate image laundering was aimed to sanitize lived experiences and true reality on ground to “Environmental Motivated Clashes” as solely driving the alleged aggression against Fulani groups in Nigeria.
However, while Fulani militia on ground with unsuspecting names such as herdsmen, bandits continue rampaging communities in Nigeria, some elements within the past and present government engage in spinning narrative to shield fulani transnational terrorism, and genocide on Christian communities.
The 2023 report presents a sadistic Machiavellian theory curated to shield and absolve “Fulani elites and terrorism sponsors” from facing accountability, global exposure and sanctions over Fulani militia attacks in Nigeria and beyond.
Come as it may, Three (3) years down the line, world attention has finally been drawn on this state-sponsored insecurity, Christian genocides and deliberate attempts of cover up in Nigeria, thanks to the incredible unrelenting advocacy works of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, (IPOB) and other groups. These resilient efforts against state-funded image laundering has yielded significant results such as: US designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern over ongoing Christian genocide, sustained global scrutiny on certain Fulani elites, groups and establishments accused of sponsoring terrorism and arrival of US boots in Nigeria to flush out terrorists, including Fulani militia networks codenamed; herdsmen and bandits.
